 HOW TO GET TO ISLAND?

Motorway Villach-Ljubljana-Split
(or the end of the Highway) *,
then further on by coastal ferry to Split, Drvenik, Ploče
or Orebić.
Local ferries cannot be booked in advance, the ticket is
obtained directly in the port before departure
Advice (tip): Do not drive to Zagreb but take a shortcut
via Karlovac. Thus you save kilometres and time, first
of all at the border.
*Highway to Split is completed, the section to Split (30
km to Šestanovac) should be completed by June 2006.

Which ferry port on the mainland to
take? (We thought of Split as this is the end of the
Motorway).
You do not have to decide finally yet.
It depends at which time of the day you arrive in front
of Split. If you can catch the appropriate ferry then
drive to Split, otherwise it is better to go directly
towards Drvenik or Ploče. If you decide for the ferry
from Ploče to Trpanj, then you have to drive another
20 km by the local road on the peninsula of Pelješac
and then take the ferry from Orebić to Korčula (Dominče).
If there are many vehicles, then the ferry from Orebić
drives non-stop (appr. Every 30 minutes).
Which arrival ports on Korčula to
chose (Would Vela Luka would be OK or it is too far?)
The road from Vela Luka to the town
of Korčula is good, 50 km or appr. 45 minutes.
How long (on the basis of experience)
does the drive by car to Split last? From
Ljubljana to Split about 5 hours – on the motorway
Zagreb-Split the traffic is of low density, but it
is difficult to forecast during the high season. In
any case, it is better to chose the shortcut via Karlovac
in order to save kilometres and time and also because
of the border as there are not trucks there so that
practically there are no jams.
